CAS Hanwei is perhaps the world’s largest manufacturer of swords, Knives and replica weaponry in the world.
The company was founded in 1991 by Chen Chao-Po who is perhaps better known by the pseudonym “Paul Chen”. Chen
Chao-po whose means, “morning wave” is the founder of the Hanwei sword-making company that is currently based
in Dalian, China.
Paul Chen grew up in Taiwan where, as a young man, he developed an
ongoing fascination for swords and knives. Largely unable to afford antique and custom-made pieces he became a custom maker
himself, enjoying success in this field in both Asia and the U.S. Paul Chen being an avid sword collector himself often faced
the dilemma of finding quality swords at a reasonable price. Paul Chen is also one of the founder members of the “Republic
Of China Arts Knife And Sword Preservation Association” and as such has gained access to many national treasure swords
in order to study and emulate the traditional methods of sword forging.
In 1991 Paul Chen
decided to become a full-time manufacturer and moved his enterprise to Dalian, China with the aim of building a professional
team of sword and knife manufacturers in the “Steel City” of northern China. Early undertakings were mainly in
the form of knife components created for other major knife companies.
By 1993 “Dalian Hanwei
Metal Co. Ltd (Hanwei)” was officially founded. The name “Hanwei” translates as “China’s Honour”
has managed to combine traditional craftsmanship with the knowledge of modern equipment and metallurgy, in such a way that
allows Hanwei to supply a worldwide market whilst easily meeting if not bettering the quality of many custom made products
available elsewhere. The Early experience of Hanwei was that of Katana and other so called “Samurai swords”, which
undoubtedly remain the cornerstone of the Hanwei product range.
Thanks to the assistance of several of its major distributors,
Hanwei was able to introduce European-style swords into its range during the mid-1990s. These swords soon became as equally
popular with Collectors, Re-Enactors and Fencers with a lust for traditional weaponry.
In 2002 the increasing
scale of the Hanwei operation pushed the company into a larger purpose built factory which in turn provided the much-needed
space and in turn improvements to production efficiency.
Today the Hanwei Company employs over
three hundred and fifty staff at the Dalian facility alone and produces over six hundred items of sword, Knife and Historical
Armour and Weaponry. Distributed in the USA by CAS Iberia (which was recently purchased by Hanwei, hence the name CAS Hanwei), novice
collectors are often easily confused by the three apparent company names for the same products (Hanwei, CAS Hanwei and Paul
Chen) It is rather unsurprising that Ron Chen (The Son of Paul Chen) would want to follow in his father footsteps and become
an integral part of the Hanwei story. However a fact that shocks many so called “Katana Purists” is that Ron Chen
has studied extensively under the legendary Japanese sword-maker “Yoshindo Yoshihara” and that with his unique
insight into the manufacture of Japanese style blades is the driving force behind Hanwei’s Tamahagane and Bainite blade
developments. Today, the name of CAS Hanwei and that of its founder Paul Chen undoubtedly provoke an image of fine functional swords
and historically accurate weaponry.
The New Hanwei Logo
The outer portion
of the logo bearing the CAS Hanwei name is a traditional European belt crest, symbolizing the strong ties to the medieval
European west, which provides inspiration for our work. The belt terminates in a double "V" pattern, a symbol closely
tied to prosperity throughout China and eastern Asia. The centre of the logo features an elaborate Chinese dragon considered
to be a powerful symbol of good fortune. His long whiskers represent an older dragon and, consequently, his great wisdom.
The four arms form a square of stability. The dragon holds what is undoubtedly the most famous symbol of western medieval
weaponry in his mouth; a single-handed broadsword.
