Edo Period Iron Tsuba Signed "Mitsunaga Saku"

Item # Antique-01

MitsunagaTsuba.jpg
Sold

This Iron tsuba is signed "Mitsunaga saku" as indicated by the literal transcription of the Japanese script.

The Mei reads (From Top to Bottom) "Mitsu" "Naga" "Saku".

"Mitsunaga" is the name of the artist, whilst "Saku" loosely translates as "Made This" or "Crafted By".

This Tsuba is of seventeenth century design (Early to Mid Edo period 1603AD – 1700AD) in a Brown Iron finish, sometimes called Russet Iron.

The Tsuba features an “Unryu” or “Cloud Dragon” circled by billowing clouds; very fine traces of the original gold leaf detailing can still be seen on the claws, horns, eyes and talons.

The Tsuba is quite small in size and the previous owners thought this to be a modified Wakizashi tsuba; however recent research suggests that it is in-fact an unmodified Katana Tsuba.

This Tsuba comes from the personal collection of a renowned UK martial artist.

Edo Period Iron Sukashi Tsuba

Item # Antique-02

EdoSukashiTsuba.jpg
Sold

This Iron tsuba is unsigned but is thought to be of the Edo period (1603AD – 1800AD) in a Brown Iron finish, sometimes called Russet Iron.

The Tsuba features a Foliate Sukashi design resembling leaves or rushes. The majority of the original Gold gilding is intact and the symmetry of the Tsuba lends itself to mounting on both Katana and Tachi style blades.

An interesting feature of this Tsuba is that one of the original Kozuka-Hitsu-Ana or Kogai-Hitsu-Ana has at some stage been filled in with what looks like black glass or very deep enamel over what may be a copper or lead base.

This Tsuba comes from the personal collection of a renowned UK martial artist.
